We are working so hard putting sounds together to read words. The kids are doing such a great job! We have been working on letter recognition, letter sounds, hearing the first sound in a word, listening to a word and hearing all of the sounds in a word and now we are reading real and nonsense words. Reading nonsense words, along with the other skills I mentioned, are skills that the kids are tested on our with DIBELS assessment. The Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy (DIBELS) is given here at school several times a year. DIBELS are a set of procedures and measures the acquisition of early literacy skills from kindergarten through sixth grade. We have been playing games to practice reading real and nonsense words. The kids love it. You can see how this skill really reinforces correctly sounding out short vowels within these consonant, vowel, consonant (CVC) words. Check your little ones take home folder for games, ideas and practice that you can use at home!
