We are working so hard putting sounds together to read words. The kids are doing such a great job! We have been working on letter recognition, letter sounds, hearing the first sound in a word, listening to a word and hearing all of the sounds in a word and now we are reading real and nonsense words. Reading nonsense words, along with the other skills I mentioned, are skills that the kids are tested on our with DIBELS assessment. The Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy (DIBELS) is given here at school several times a year. DIBELS are a set of procedures and measures the acquisition of early literacy skills from kindergarten through sixth grade. We have been playing games to practice reading real and nonsense words. The kids love it. You can see how this skill really reinforces correctly sounding out short vowels within these consonant, vowel, consonant (CVC) words. Check your little ones take home folder for games, ideas and practice that you can use at home!

It's hard to imagine a winter without snow, so we thought we would write about it!
What would you do if you lived inside a snow globe? We are really starting to move to writing a lot more on our own. We are using kid writing to sound out words and write down the sounds that we hear. We use our fingers to sound out words. If we sound out the word cat, we start with our thumb and say /k/, /a/, /t/. Then, we write down those 3 sounds that we hear. Words do not need to be correctly spelled at this point. We are just aiming to get those 3 sounds down to make the word. We are also using our sight words in our writing and these are displayed on our word wall in our classroom so the kids can spell those
correctly. Take a look at some of our awesome writing below! We are lucky to have some great apps on our ipads here at school for the kids. I wanted to share some of our favorites with you. These reinforce some of the math skills we are working on in class. Ask your kindergartner which is their favorite! Here our some apps that we love that reinforce some of our reading skills. These are great practice for your little one at home.
